Authorities insist industrial pollution is not the cause. But the loss of the fish, both wild and farmed, has left fish farmers in the area with large financial losses. More than 200 tons of fish were found dead in the Zijiang River of China’s Hunan Province this week. It’s taking a painful financial toll on local fish farmers. Environmental authorities say direct economic losses reached 20-million yuan, or 3.1-million US dollars. More than 130 families running fish farms say their livelihoods have been devastated. [Local Fisherman]: “One net cage holds 1.6 tons of fish. I have 39 cages that total 60 tons of fish. I invested all my money in them, and I’ve lost at least more than a million yuan.” [Local Fisherwoman]: “I am really heart-broken seeing all these dead fish. I migrated from Xiaoxi Power Station and I live on nothing but fish farming.” The fish were found along a 34-mile stretch of the river according to environmental authorities, state media reported. Tests found the water’s oxygen content was well below normal. The Shanghai Daily quoted a nearby fisherman who said he noticed the dead fish after a stream of dark water passed through the river from Yangxi Bridge.
